Red Nail Theory is currently trending so it’s time to look at one my favorite red nail polishes. I love red nail colors any time of the year, but I especially enjoy them as we approach the fall and winter months.

Today we’re going to look at a red nail polish that is one of the best alternatives to OPI Big Apple Red that I’ve found yet.

Let’s talk about OPI Red Hot Rio. It’s from the 2014 Brazil Spring Collection and OPI defines it as a ruby red creme nail color. Ruby is the birthstone for July, so it’s the perfect time to be talking about this shade.

Red Hot Rio is a gorgeous classic red that’s neither too cool nor too warm - it’s just right.

For many years, this has been a fall-back red nail color in my collection, meaning I wear it whenever I am in the mood for a red, but don’t know which one to choose.

The reason it works as a go-to red nail is because although it was released as part of a Spring Collection, it’s not too bright where it screams summer, and it’s not too dark where it feels like a fall or winter shade. It’s a red nail polish you can wear all season long.

The shade number on Red Hot Rio is NLA70.

You can wear it in a single coat for a sheer, jelly red look, but in this post, you’ll see it in the classic 2 coat look.

What I love about it too, is how quickly it dries.

The bottle that is being featured in this post is around 4-5 years old and it still dries as quickly as it did when the polish was just opened.

I clean the necks of the bottle after every use to make sure the lacquer does not have extra air getting to it, and I store them in a dark closet, but still, that’s rare for nail polish.

Typically, even with the best storage and bottle care methods, as polishes age, the drying solvents evaporate and it takes longer to dry.

One of the ways you know nail polish has degraded a bit, actually, is how much drying time has increased since it was new.

So this bottle is past its 24-month “best buy” open date by quite a while and it’s still going strong, which to me, means it was a good investment because it has lasted longer than expected.

In case you’re curious, OPI marks its standard lacquer bottles with a 24-month best by date, and its gel lacquer bottles with a 18-month guarantee.

If you are diligent and use your polishes, it is possible to “use up” a nail polish in this time - I definitely have, but even if you don’t, keep in mind that as a collector, I generally hold onto polishes far longer than this and still use them.

You can do whatever you want with those guidelines, but to me, as long as it sets and dries down properly, it is still perfectly usable and this bottle is.

Let’s look at some swatches of this gorgeous ruby red creme nail color -

You can definitely see a little bit of the nail line peek through the polish at some angles, but at 3 coats or with shorter nails, this is gone and you can’t see it at an arms length.

So I’m confident in saying that it is a mostly opaque classic red nail color that is as reliable as it is beautiful. Perhaps that is why it has been in production for 12 years and counting.

What more could you ask for in a red nail polish?

For best results, pair it with an OPI Base and Top Coat. To make it a longer lasting manicure, use the OPI Infinite Shine Base and Top Coat duo instead.
