Burgundy is one of the most loved colors among my readers in the fall and winter. It's also one of my favorite nail colors. Even before I started this blog, burgundy was my favorite color for nails.
Over the years of collecting burgundy nail colors and showcasing them here for others, I have developed a nuanced eye for determining the slight tone and hue differences between burgundy nail polishes.
You may have already seen the post on OPI Malaga Wine VS OPI Got the Blues for Red.
These colors, which we’ll revisit below, are so similar they’re basically sisters.
Another one of my favorite posts is OPI Burgundies, which really focuses on the options you have, not necessarily the differences between them.
But back to OPI Malaga Wine, it was one of OPI’s first shades.
They call it an “intoxicating wine red,” and in reality, that’s true as many red wines are some kind of burgundy.
Then, we’ll move into the comparisons between OPI Malaga Wine and other popular, similar shades - there are 6 total.
Underneath each comparison, you’ll find a brief description of how the shades contrast from each other.
OPI Malaga Wine
Now let’s begin the comparisons…
OPI Malaga Wine VS OPI Big Apple Red
Both are red cream shades that are equally iconic to OPI collectors, but Malaga Wine is much darker in tone, whereas Big Apple Red is more of a classic, bright red.
I love them both equally, but for different reasons and occasions.

OPI Malaga Wine VS essie gel couture bubbles only
Compared to Malaga Wine, essie gel couture bubbles only is a touch lighter and it doesn’t require a base coat, saving you a step.
Both are cream burgundies and Malaga Wine is available in a longwearing formula like essie gel couture.
OPI Malaga Wine VS OPI Got the Blues for Red
While I cover this comparison extensively in the post linked above, in short, these two are so similar. The main difference is that Malaga Wine is a bit cooler, and Got the Blues for Red is a bit warmer.
Both are cream burgundies but I consider Got the Blues for Red to lean somewhere between ox-blood and burgundy, though it is technically a blue based red.
OPI Malaga Wine VS OPI We the Female
Another extremely similar shade to Malaga Wine, like Got the Blues for Red, all are burgundy creams in the same range of color.
Compared to Malaga Wine, I see We the Female as having a kiss of more coolness with some berry undertones to it, though it is technically called a “garnet” red.
We the Female is so similar to Malaga Wine, that if you have one you may not need the other unless you are a burgundy lover like me, then you may need to try both.

OPI Malaga Wine VS OPI I’m Not Really a Waitress
Both classic OPI shades from pre-2000s, the main difference is that Malaga Wine is a burgundy cream, whereas I’m Not Really a Waitress is a burgundy pearl.
Both are gorgeous in their own right.
OPI Malaga Wine VS OPI Como se Llama?
I love both of these shades.
Compared to Malaga Wine, Como se Llama? is a touch darker and it has strong brown undertones. It’s a brick toned burgundy, whereas Malaga Wine doesn’t have any brown in it.

Last comparison…
OPI Malaga Wine VS OPI Complimentary Wine
Both are burgundy creams, but Complimentary Wine is much darker - it’s a blackish burgundy, where Malaga Wine is more of a classic mid-tone burgundy.
Which one of these reds do you like most for fall and winter? Are you sticking with Malaga Wine, or do you think you’ll branch out to one of the other beauties shown above?
Whichever shade you choose, for best results wear them with a base and top coat, with the exception of the essie gel couture shade, that only requires a top coat.
