Gel Polish Brands That Worked for My Sensitive Skin

When I first started wearing gel polish, I discovered that not every brand worked for me.
Some had beautiful color ranges and affordable prices, but they left the skin around my nails swollen and even caused chemical burns on my nail beds.
After speaking with my dermatologist, she suggested I switch brands rather than give up gel polish altogether.
Her reasoning made perfect sense: if a skincare product irritates your skin, you don't necessarily stop using skincare - you simply look for a formulation that works better for you.
So that's exactly what I did.
Over the following year, I tested a variety of gel polish brands and thankfully, I found several that I can wear repeatedly without experiencing the reactions I had before.
Before I share them, it's important to note that I have very sensitive skin and have worked with dermatologists for years to build routines that suit my body.
I also routinely check ingredient lists for products that may be pore-clogging, irritating, or otherwise problematic for my skin.
But, for a long time, I didn't apply that same level of scrutiny to nail products. It was partially a lapse in oversight on my part and also, a desire to be open minded.
So my nail routine was a bit of the "wild west." It was an anything goes situation.
But after experiencing a reaction to gel polish, I realized my nail products deserved the same careful formula consideration as my skincare.
So below, you’ll find the gel polish brands I’ve tried that last, haven’t caused irritation and I regularly use.
This blog isn't meant to be a comprehensive list of every "safe" gel polish brand.
These are simply the brands I've personally tried, worn multiple times, and found compatible with my skin.
In the spirit of full transparency, I’ve received PR samples of each of the brands below, and I continue to wear and buy them on a regular basis. PR samples are how I try a lot of polishes and sometimes, it really does work out.
If a brand isn't listed below, it doesn't necessarily mean I had a bad experience with it—I may simply not have tested it yet.
My hope is that if you've experienced irritation from gel polish, this list gives you a few brands to consider. Everyone's sensitivities are different, but sometimes changing formulations can make all the difference.
Gel Polish Brands That Didn't Cause Irritation for Me
OPI Intelli-Gel
OPI Intelli-Gel is HEMA-free and TPO-free, which was one of the reasons I wanted to try it.
It does contain a small amount of hydroquinone to help prevent photo-lightening, so if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, that's something to discuss with your healthcare provider.
This is the gel polish I reach for most often because it has consistently worked well for me.

Le Mini Macaron 3-in-1 Gel Polish
The Le Mini Macaron all-in-one gel formula doesn't require a separate base coat or top coat, making it one of the simplest gel systems I've used.
It's designed to cure with a single-finger lamp, which helps minimize unnecessary UV exposure to the rest of your hand. I especially appreciate how compact and travel-friendly the system is.
Red Carpet Manicure
I've had good experiences with both the Cream Gel Palettes and the Fortify & Protect collection.
One note: the Fortify & Protect line contains Vitamin A (retinol), so if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you'll want to review the ingredients with your healthcare provider before using it.
Whimsy Nail Co
Whimsy Nail Co is an independent brand that offers HEMA-free, TPO-free, and HPMA-free gel polishes that I have been enjoying this year. I first was intrigued by their builder gel, but have come to enjoy their color gel polishes too.

Final Thoughts
When I first developed a reaction to a gel polish line, I lamented because I assumed it meant my gel manicure days were over. But I’ve since learned that didn’t have to be the case.
In my experience, switching to different formulations made a significant difference, and I was able to find several brands that I can wear comfortably.
Everyone's skin is different, so the products that work well for me may not work for you.
If you've experienced swelling, itching, or other reactions, you may find it’s worth talking with a dermatologist to better understand which ingredients you may be sensitive to.
I'll continue updating this list as I test more brands, but for now, these are the gel polishes I've personally used and purchased with good results.
Hopefully, they give you a helpful starting point if you're searching for gel polish options that are a better fit for sensitive skin.
