I just spent two weeks in the desert at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival.
This is my third year going to Coachella and I’ve spent the past two years testing different nail systems and application techniques, to find out what lasts through 3-days in the desert and then some.
There were many nail systems I tried that didn't hold up through my testing process.
In the past, my nails would regularly chip, lift, or otherwise look terrible, sometimes by hour 1 of Coachella.
While many of the wear tests were disappointing to say the least, I knew a solution existed if I just kept searching for it, so I continued on.
What Makes Coachella So Brutal on Nails
The Coachella Music and Arts Festival is located in the Colorado Desert region of the larger Sonoran Desert in California.
The desert is a harsh, somewhat unforgiving ecosystem, though I love it.
I love deserts because I find the ecological adaptations of the creatures that survive there to be so interesting, but there is no denying that it is tough on the body and your nails.
In the desert, you’re dealing with a unique set of external factors, which makes it ideal for testing the rugged reliability of different polish formulas.
You’re managing:
Heat (100°F+ days), leading to polish melting
Dust everywhere and infiltrating at the nail edges
Dry air, meaning shrinkage and lifting of any nail system
Sweat and sunscreen, which means oils breaking adhesion
Constant hand use from digging in bags, using phones, and handling drinks
This sets up most products to fail and explains why my 3-year test results matter.
And this year, I’ve finally found the answer - a nail system that works for Coachella!
What Nails Failed For Coachella And Why
Before we get deeper into what works, let’s first discuss what you may want to cross off your list.
Now that I’ve been to six Coachella weekends and tested different polish systems for each one, I have found that:
Regular and “gel-like” polish → chips within hours and often, smudges or melts in the desert heat and sun
Retail press-ons → adhesive breaks down from heat/sweat and if there is a printed design, it wears off on the tips
Non-salon gel systems → lifting due to under-curing, dust infiltration or sweat and moisture
For most brands and systems I tried, the facts are that the nails would lift, chip, melt and take on embedded dust particles, or show signs of finish wear, within the first day of the festival - often within the first few hours.
Mistakes Not To Make With Gel Polish at Outdoor Music Festivals
If your gel polish didn’t last at Coachella or any other outdoor music festival, it may have been for one of the reasons below.
Here are some things I tried in previous years that did not work:
Not sealing edges
Applying thick layers for “strength”
Skipping prep because you’re rushing
Mixing brands (base/top/lamp mismatch)
Soaking your nails in the hot tub at your rental house
Don’t worry if you resonate with anything on the above list - the reason I know these things don’t work is through testing failure, so I learned all this the hard way too.
Why Gel Polish Was Chosen for Coachella
For my first 2 years at the festival, I tried regular nail polish, gel-like nail polish, press on nails, and several other gel polish brands.
I like gel polish because once it’s cured - it will not smudge. It’s rock hard.
You can literally finish your manicure, put your shoes on and go. It’s plug and play, in that sense.
Air-dry nail polish tends to soften in the heat, even after it’s fully dried, leading to smudges and dents at the festival.
I found that even a flawless manicure didn’t hold up under the sun. And if it didn’t visibly smudge, the softened surface would still pick up dust.
Because of this, neither regular nor gel-like polish held up well in Coachella’s desert conditions - they’d soften, then either smudge or collect debris.
Gel, however, seemed more promising since it fully cures and stays set, so I focused my efforts there.
What Nails Work for Coachella?
Coachella is a music AND art festival, so nail art is valued here and it is part of the “fashion art” aspect of the event.
One of my favorite things about nail art at the festival is seeing everyone’s design and color choices and I am often asked for my insight on what I’m doing for Coachella, since I run this blog.
There are so many different designs to choose from for the perfect Coachella desert festival nails.
But before you get to design, the tools you use matter.
The brand and formula matters.
You could have the most amazing, creative artful design in mind, but if the formula you used to create it doesn’t hold up, your nails will not last and you’ll be bummed.
So now, I can confidently not only suggest fashionable designs and color choices, but also a formula system that is reliable, rugged and salon quality to create your manicure with.
Here is what my manicure looked like after 14-days in the desert including Coachella:
It’s a popular opaque milky pink nail color that I also like in nail polish form for manicures in less demanding environments.
You can definitely see the growth of the manicure but other than that, it’s pure perfection.
While I took these photos at 14-days, ultimately, I wore this manicure for 16-days before the grow-out got to me, and I needed to switch it out.
Is It Worth Bringing a Lamp to Coachella?
Yes!
Last year, I tried OPI’s Intelli-Gel without the brand specific OPI Star Light Lamp and it failed - the gel polish lifted within the same day - the off-brand travel lamp I purchased and hoped would work was not strong enough.
A valuable takeaway from that experience is:
Using a random travel lamp with salon gel is basically setting yourself up for failure. Just match brand to brand for lamp and formula - it will create the best possible chances for longest adhesion.
The lamp takes up room in your luggage, so plan for the space.
Nail lamps are also full of fragile mechanics, so I also highly recommend filling the lamp cavity with bubble wrap, wrapping it in bubble wrap and placing it amongst your clothing for extra protection.
While the OPI Star Light Lamp is a bulky little thing, it was worth it to bring it along.
What I Packed In My Nail Kit for Coachella
I started packing my nail kit before anything else, because of my priorities. Here’s what I brought with me:
- Nail files - glass and 100/180 grit paper file
- Cuticle remover cream
- Stainless steel cuticle pusher
- Cuticle snips
- Cuticle oil
- Nail scrubber brush
- Lint free wipes
- Buffing stick
- Nail clippers
- OPI BondAid
- OPI Intelli-Gel GelColor Super Base
- OPI Intelli-Gel GelColor Super Gloss
- OPI Intelli-Gel GelColor Let’s Be Friends!
- OPI Star Light Lamp
- Gel removal wraps
Rather than packing the solvents and taking them on the plane, I purchased Acetone and Alcohol from the grocery store when I got to Indio.
Why OPI Intelli-Gel + Star Light Lamp Actually Worked For Coachella
To recap, after 3 years of Coachella and six 3-day festivals, the best solution I’ve found is OPI Intelli-Gel.
It offers:
Stronger cure = better cross-linking of gel molecules
Stronger lamp compatibility to cure all fingers including your thumbs
Even curing prevents soft centers → reduces lifting
My Gel Polish Application Process
I’ve also been working on my adhesion game during this test and it has paid off!
As mentioned above, I achieved 16-days of wear in the desert. Since the desert environment is a bit harsher, I’m happy with the result.
Because part of this longevity I can attribute to prep, here is what I did:
Prep
Cuticle removal is more than pushing back. Use a cuticle remover cream and snips to really clean up any excess cuticle on the nail bed.
Nail shaping: file to your desired shape with the rough grit cardboard file and then finish with the glass file for smoother edges to prevent chips.
Light buff with a buffing stick: a buffing stick with a buff pad will give you a more precisely buffed nail plate for better adhesion.
Clean the nails with soap and nail scrub brush. Really get in there and get under the nail tips too. Any dish soap designed to cut grease works.
Dehydrate with alcohol and lint free wipe. Double dehydrate if you have oily nail beds as I do.
OPI BondAid as your final step before the Intelli-Gel Super Base coat on every nail.
Application Notes
30 seconds of cure per layer
Cap the free edge to prevent premature lifting
Place fingers in groove spots in the lamp to cure
Thin coats - it helps the UV light really get every molecule cured
Nail Maintenance During the Coachella Music Festival
OPI Intelli-Gel holds up really well, but some aftercare tips that can help your manicure stay strong in the desert are:
Cuticle oil after you shower or at the end of the day
Emergency fixes may be necessary so keep a nail file on hand
Avoid picking as it creates a gateway for dust to get in and lift your manicure
Finally, The Length & Shape That Actually Survives Coachella
Nail design isn’t just the formula or nail system, it’s structural too.
I’ve found that when wearing natural nails to the festival, the best length is short-to-medium and the best shape is square-to-rounded square.
Almond is by far my favorite nail shape, however, it is prone to breaks. So, my go-to nail shape for Coachella is short-to-medium square.
While you can do long extensions in the desert, I’ve found that these can be risky, depending on your role at the event.
If you’re working at the festival, you could break a nail and not have the resources to fix it on site.
If you’re attending as a guest at a campsite, you will still be setting up your camp, and nail breaks can happen then, too.
For me, I found that worrying about breaking a nail on the festival grounds was not something I even wanted to think about, so a short square shape is my recommendation for your Coachella nail shape.
All in all, after 3 years, many products tried and tested, the solution I’ve found for wearing natural nails to Coachella is the OPI Intelli-Gel System in a short to medium square shape.
After that, your next decision is to decide if you’re going with a color block look as I did, or you’re going to mix colors to create a custom nail design.
What type of nail art will you bring to the desert?
