Today we're taking a closer look at Once Upon a Time (color number #1157), an icy blue longwear nail polish with subtle slate-gray undertones.

Originally released in Essie's Enchanted Collection, this creamy, cool-toned shade is part of the Gel by Essie line (formerly Gel Couture).

While it isn't a true gel polish, it cures with natural sunlight like a regular air-dry polish, it delivers a gel-like finish and is designed to last up to 15 days—without requiring a UV or LED lamp.

Application & Wear

For the best results, apply two coats of Once Upon a Time to clean, dry natural nails. I also like to dehydrate my nails with a swipe of isopropyl alcohol before application to help adhesion.

No base coat is needed.

Finish with the Gel by Essie Top Coat, which adds high shine, dries quickly, and helps protect against chips.

Around day seven, or whenever you notice the first signs of tip wear, reapply the top coat to help extend your manicure to the full 14–15 days.

About the Shade

Once Upon a Time (#1157) is a soft blue-grey cream that's especially beautiful during the colder months.

And what makes this shade memorable for me isn't just the color; it's the story behind it.

The polish debuted in Essie's Enchanted Collection, alongside shades like Matter of Fiction, a pale cool blush, and Princess Charming, a rosy crème.

Released in late 2017, the collection was inspired by fairytales, romance, and royalty, creating a dreamy, princess-like mood.

Why I Love It

I've always been drawn to nail polish collections that tell a story.

I often choose polishes based not only on the color but also on the shade name, the collection theme, and the feeling they're meant to evoke.

Those details become part of the experience of wearing them.

Once Upon a Time made me feel cozy, cared for, and just a little more whimsical.

Sometimes a manicure is about more than having polished nails.

It's about the small details that brighten your day and the positive feelings these details evoke.

These photos were taken during a snowy, overcast day, so you'll see the polish in soft indoor and outdoor lighting.

The cool light really complements the muted blue-grey tone, making it feel even more serene and elegant.

Final Thoughts

One of my favorite things about Gel by Essie is the peace of mind it offers.

It’s a long wearing nail polish line that reduces my stress - and since I’m trying to quit stress, it’s a brand I’ve leaned into over the years.

When I know my manicure is less likely to chip while I'm running errands, visiting friends, or going about my week, it's one less thing to get concerned or worried about.

That little bit of reliability feels surprisingly luxurious—and yes, even a little fairytale-like. My ability to trust this line has been one of the reasons why I continue to feature and recommend it both on and off line.

If you're looking for a soft blue polish that wears beautifully through cooler weather, Once Upon a Time is well worth considering.
