Today we’re looking at a throwback shade from the year that changed it all - 2020.
Let’s look back and think about some positives that came out of it.
We’ve grieved it, and will continue to in many ways, but for now, we’re going to focus on some of the beauty that came from it.
This blog was one of the good things that emerged, because during my downtime, I decided to publicly swatch and share my nail polish collection.
Something else positive that emerged was the OPI Summer 2020 Hidden Prism Collection.
Typically these days, OPI releases 12 shades for the standard lacquer/GelColor line and 12 shades for the Infinite Shine line - 24 shades total for each season.
In the summer of 2020, the collection volume was half the amount it is today and I totally get it.
The work I was doing at the time, in a different field, was also halved and then some. My fiancé’s work vanished completely for 18 months or so.
It was a weird time in the world of work - what about that year wasn’t a bit different from the rest?
But let’s get back to the silver lining of it all.
Although it was a bizarre time in healthcare and for our careers, it seems it was also the perfect time to experiment with prisms in pigments.
Because nail polish is art, we can only expect new nail polish releases to also be a bit interesting.
Here were the nail polish shades in the Hidden Prism line up:
OPI Nail Lacquer & GelColor Shades:
Ray-diance (yellow lime shimmer)
Magic Hour (orange shimmer)
She's a Prismaniac (pink shimmer - our feature today)
Rainbows a Go Go (purple shimmer)
Pigment of My Imagination (blue shimmer)
Gleam On! (lime green shimmer)
OPI Infinite Shine Shades:
Optical Illu-sun (lime green pearl)
Coral Chroma (peach pearl)
Feeling Optiprismic (pink pearl)
Rainbows in Your Fuchsia (cool pink pearl)
Your Lime to Shine (cool green pearl)
Prismatic Fanatic (blue pearl)
In addition to this collection being 6 shades in each line up, it was all sheer color-shifting shimmers in standard lacquer and GelColor line, which is also unusual for OPI, which typically does collections that are primarily creams, except for a few spare collections and the annual holiday collection.
The Infinite Shine collection was all pearls, which was also somewhat unusual for OPI, but in a year like 2020, I’m totally OK with more shimmers and pearls being one of the interesting things that came from it.
Whenever things get weird, even today, I reach for glitter to improve the situation. I’ve done it many times - put on a bit of shimmer to help me carry on.
During the pandemic time, there was also a historic flood in my neck of the woods that we all still talk about today, because it required, by many reports, 500+ water rescues.
And likewise, while I waited for power to come back on, for roads to open back up and help to arrive, I put on a shimmer nail shade, figured out how to persevere, and carried on.
A little sparkle always helps, I think because it makes you smile.
When you’re smiling, you’re optimistic. When you’re optimistic, you feel light and joy. In that light-hearted mood, positive, forward-thinking solutions can be found more easily.
This is my theory as to why glitter can sometimes be either the beginning of an answer or the answer itself.
It introduces the feeling of whimsy and whimsical thoughts are almost always thinking outside the box.
So below, we’re looking at She’s a Prismaniac (#NLSR3) in 2 coats.
It’s the only shade I have right now from this collection, and it’s also the only pink of the standard lacquers from this launch.
With the standard lacquer shades, you could probably reach opacity with them in possibly 4 coats, but no one has time for that.
Some people have reached it in 3, though not everyone has achieved that.
And if I can reach even coverage in 2 coats, if it’s sheer shade, I usually stop there, so that’s where we are.

All in all, as I was swatching this shade, I kept asking myself,
“What is a prismaniac and am I one?”
So far, the answer I have come up with is: a prismaniac is someone who loves rainbow prisms, the shifting colors of light that dance in the sun.
If that’s what it is, then I’m one - do you like nail polish with shifting pigments?
Are you a prismaniac, too?
Let me know in the comments!
