Sometimes there is nothing better than going back to the basics.
For me, one of the most basic, classic nail looks is a pink and white manicure.
This typically involves a white tip with a pink base, also known as a French or American Manicure.
French Manicures are where the crisp white tip is on top of a pink overlay and in American Manicures, you put the white tip underneath the pink overlay for a softer look.
I usually prefer an American Manicure because I find them easier to do and more imperfection blurring, but either way, there is nothing basic about creating these nail designs, it does take some practice to master the lines.
Thankfully, you can get a pink and white manicure look in a simpler way with a milky pink nail, which is a sheer pink with white undertones.
Milky pink nails offer the best of both worlds.
I like the milky pink look because it gives your nails an easy, flattering, polished look. If you have nail tips, milky pink nails naturally accentuate them, bringing out the whiteness for a natural healthy nail look.

Gel by Essie Sheer Fantasy
Sheer Fantasy recently had a formula update and it is now pinker, but it is still a sheer milky pink color.
What is shown here is the older, pre-updated formula - if you can get it, it is on the milkier side.
Depending on whether you find a new, pinker bottle or old, whiter bottle, this shade is a long-lasting sheer milky pink nail color that I use up. I love it on its own and as a base for French or American Manicures when I want to add more white to the tips.
Like all Gel by Essie shades, also called Gel Couture shades, you do not need a gel lamp to cure them - they air dry, as they are regular polishes that are designed to be more long-lasting.

Essie Mademoiselle
The original milky pink nail color in my eyes.
Essie Mademoiselle is the first shade that comes to my mind anytime someone asks about a milky pink nail color or an easy “pink and white” manicure.
I’ve purchased multiple bottles of it over the years. It is one of the few shades where I have used up the bottle.
Gel by Essie Gossamer Garments
This milky pink sheer nail color is a beauty, it’s a bit on the warmer side, with beige undertones. If you love Essie Fairy Tailor, but want something a bit pinker and milkier, this is it.
Essie Vanity Fairest
Vanity Fairest is a sheer milky pink nail color with some beige undertones and a tiny bit of sparkle. If you love Essie Ballet Slippers, but are looking for something a bit more pink, a bit more sheer and with glitter, this is it.
It’s on my regular rotation for weekend wear - when I’m in between blogs, I reach for this one, as it is so easy to wear and apply.
OPI Passion
Passion is an OPI classic. It was one of the first shades I considered swatching alongside OPI Bubble Bath when this blog began. I just knew we needed to share it because it is such a good sheer warm milky pink.
What I love about it is that most milky pink colors do take on a cooler look, due to the white in the formula, but this one retains a lot of warmth, so it is a good milky pink nail color option for tan and olive skin tones.

OPI Love is in the Bare
Love is in the Bare is a new favorite for me. It was on my wish list for a few years before it became part of my collection.
It looks great in either 2 or 3 coats, and when layered with other sheer pinks, like OPI Bubble Bath. I’m planning to layer it with OPI Funny Bunny next to see what happens.
While it is more of a sheer pink than a sheer white, it does have some white undertones, giving it a cool, crystal pink look. I’m seriously considering wearing this one when I say “I do!”

China Glaze sent us this shade when they were launching their newly formulated nail colors. I love it and it was my favorite of all the shades sent in that mailer.
It’s the perfect mix of white and pink, and creates a sheer, princess vibe nail look. I think this shade is so delicate and elegant, it would work well as a bridal nail color.
Gel by Essie Matter of Fiction
Matter of Fiction is from Essie’s long-wearing nail polish line also known as Essie Gel Couture. The beauty of this nail color is that it does not need a base coat. Just prep your nails well and apply the matching top coat.
What I love about it is that it has a cloud-like milky pink softness to its overall look. For best results, apply whisper-light, soft, thin strokes, with the brush parallel to the nail.
